Simple steps to promote Fire Prevention Week

Use the logo

Download the FPW logo in the size you need for your website, blog, social media site, etc.

Call for attention

Call or e-mail local media to remind them that Fire Prevention Week is taking place and provide journalists with important safety tips. Also, offer to arrange a spokesperson for interviews. You can also download our infographic in English (PNG) or Spanish (PNG), and use it on your website, blogs, or social media sites. The English (PDF) and Spanish (PDF) infographic is also available as a PDF to print.

Spread the word

Send a news release to local media. 

Mayor proclamation

Mayoral proclamations can complement this national attention, spotlighting the fire safety work of first responders in your city or town, and helping to reinforce the lifesaving messages associated with the annual theme. A proclamation-signing ceremony can be a great photo opportunity for the media, and valuable exposure for your department.

Social media

Share information, safety tips, or FPW activities through your social media channels. Feel free to use messages the NFPA and Sparky the Fire Dog push out, or create your own! NFPA has created Twitter and Facebook messages for you. All you have to do is copy, paste and post!

Back to school

Arrange to visit a local school to educate students about fire prevention and invite local media to attend and cover the visit. Remember that the media will be looking for opportunities to take photos so have visuals available (equipment, hats, clean fire gear, Sparky the Fire Dog) if possible.

Community outreach

Host an open house or participate in community events being hosted by other organizations during Fire Prevention Week and invite the media to attend. Schedule a webinar to inform people about Fire Prevention Week. Contact your local cable station to do interviews and talk show roundtables.


If you don’t have the resources to promote Fire Prevention Week in your community, get creative and ask local businesses for help! They’re often more willing to work with you than you may think. (Remember: If you don’t ask, the answer is always no!)

Videos to share

We’ve developed a series of Sparky video clips that reinforce important home escape planning and practice messages. Feel free to use the clips to promote this year’s campaign on social media, during classroom visits, or however they best serves your needs.

We’ve also created a loop of all the videos in one clip, which can be played continuously during fire station open houses or at any other locations where TV monitors are available. (Waiting rooms at local gas stations/auto repair shops, doctor’s offices and local hospitals are just a few suggestions.)
