Sprinkler Activation Rapidly Extinguishes Home Fire

Sprinkler headWhile responding to a 2016 home fire, the Millville Volunteer Fire Company witnessed the power of home fire sprinklers. Instead of battling an inferno, firefighters discovered that the home's fire sprinklers had extinguished the fire. "The sprinklers did exactly what they are designed to do," says Millville Fire Chief Doug Scott. "These types of systems save lives." The National Fire Protection Association notes that during most fires in homes equipped with fire sprinklers, only a single sprinkler will activate, eliminating the discharge of unnecessary water.

Local Fires Prompt Coalition Chair to Take Action
Home fire

Back-to-back home fires in Delaware prompted Coalition Chair Paul Eichler to pen a commentary on the disaster fires leave in their wake and the necessity of fire sprinklers in new homes. "These fires were terrible tragedies," he writes. "I hope that the families are able to get their lives back to normal as soon as possible. Building with sprinklers will help to make sure lives and property are well protected." Read the full commentary by visiting NFPA's Fire Sprinkler Initiative blog.

In front of more than 100 fire sprinkler advocates and key politicians, Delaware Governor Jack Markell signed legislation on August 6, 2015, aimed at improving fire safety for homeowners. The law also requires buyers to receive educational material on home fire sprinklers. This free pamphlet produced by the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office can be downloaded from its website.
