During this session, presenters will discuss how fire protection and installation guidance for lithium ion battery (LIB) based energy storage systems (ESS) is being developed through large-scale fire testing. In addition, attendees will learn about free-burn tests conducted using full ESS racks to bound the range of fire hazard presented by lithium iron phosphate and nickel manganese cobalt oxide chemistries. The audience will gain greater insight into the sprinklered fire tests that took place and were used to evaluate the performance of sprinkler protection to suppress or control the fire and limit damage to the building or surrounding equipment. This project was conducted in conjunction with the Property Insurance Research Group and in partnership with the Fire Protection Research Foundation.
