The Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS) credential was created in 1971 for the purpose of documenting competency and offering professional recognition for individuals involved in curtailing fire loss, both physical and financial.

Since then, CFPS has been awarded to more than 4,000 people who have demonstrated a level of professionalism through applied work experience, related education opportunities, and successful completion of a certification examination. This group of professionals includes risk managers, loss control specialists, fire officers, fire marshals, fire inspectors, safety managers, fire protection consultants, designers, engineers, code enforcers, facility managers and others who have responsibilities dealing with the application of fire safety, protection, prevention, and suppression technologies.

NOTICE: Effective March 1, 2020, a new CFPS Exam Blueprint/ Weighted Criteria will take effect. All candidates preparing for the CFPS exam need to be aware that AS OF MARCH 1, ALL EXAMS WILL BE BASED ON THE NEW BLUEPRINT. The current (outgoing) blueprint, as found in the Candidate Handbook, will still be in effect through February 29, 2020.

What has changed? The new exam blueprint is very similar to the outgoing (current) blueprint with regards to subject matter, but provides better clarity on the knowledge, skills, and abilities that a candidate may be tested on.

The new blueprint has twelve domains, as opposed to thirteen on the current (outgoing) blueprint, and the weighting for the domains has also been updated.

Why are we changing the blueprint? As new practices and technology develop, the job roles and tasks of a CFPS naturally evolve too. In order to ensure that the CFPS program remains current and valid, the CFPS Program Office and the CFPS Certification Advisory Group conducted a Job role and Job Task Analysis, and the outcome was the new blueprint.

Download the new CFPS Blueprint (effective March 1).
