NFPA has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 NFPA Conference & Expo® scheduled for June 15-18 in Orlando.

Although this is an important event for NFPA and its stakeholders, at this time, the world continues to be significantly impacted by COVID-19, and it will not be possible to host and conduct this event in Orlando in June. The well-being of our attendees, exhibitors, business partners and staff is of utmost importance to us.

Message from Jim Pauley, NFPA President and CEO

These are indeed unprecedented times as the world battles COVID-19 on many fronts, its lingering impact likely to continue for some time. From day one, our intent and singular focus was to hold the 2020 NFPA Conference & Expo® (C&E) only if it could be done safely for all involved.

Unfortunately, after endless monitoring of countless data and information sources, we have determined we are not able to hold our event in Florida in June. We also have been listening to our stakeholders – some of whom asked us to not hold the event and others who encouraged us to move forward.

After great thought and with the utmost concern for everyone’s wellbeing, we are cancelling the 2020 NFPA Conference & Expo.

We did not arrive at this decision easily or without an abundance of consideration. It is important to us, and it is important to all of you. Just as it has been for more than 100 years, our annual event is a key catalyst to advance fire, life, and electrical safety across the globe. This meeting is where new and updated codes and standards move forward; results from the latest research are revealed; products and services that support prevention and protection are showcased and attendees are provided one of the most productive opportunities to network with peers from across the globe who share the same commitment to reducing loss.

C&E is also the unique annual opportunity for you as stakeholders to hear first-hand from me and my team what NFPA is doing to support the work you do and further the understanding and proliferation of the Fire & Life Safety Ecosytem™.  Although we will not be in person this year, we will employ many different methods to share this information with you and solicit your feedback.

There are some activities that occur at the event, in particular our Association’s Annual Meeting and the election of directors to our Board, as well as the Codes and Standards Technical Meeting, that we will facilitate in a remote manner. More details on those activities will be forthcoming.

To say I am disappointed is an understatement. This is not the decision we wanted to make. However, NFPA is a safety organization. We could not hold an event where the welfare of attendees could be compromised.

I am sure many of you are disappointed as well. Each of you prepare in your own ways to be present and fully participate in this premier event. While I cannot do anything to change the outcome for this year, I can plant a very big seed for 2021.

The 2021 NFPA Conference & Expo will be held June 22-25 at Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas. This will be the 125th anniversary of NFPA and a huge opportunity to reconnect face-to-face, celebrate the strides we have made over the years, and press on with our commitment to meet the challenges of our times head on. We will count on you to be part of this significant event.

In the meantime, stay safe, stay healthy, and stay connected with us. It’s a Big World, Let’s Protect it Together.

Education Session questions

I had planned to attend the 2020 NFPA Conference & Expo to meet my Continuing Education Units (CEUs) requirements—what other options do I have?

NFPA has many opportunities that provide CEUs, including eLearning and Instructor Led Training. Learn more about NFPA’s training opportunities.

I had planned to attend 2020 NFPA Conference & Expo as a speaker/presenter—are there other opportunities for my presentation content to be delivered through NFPA?

Please update your education session proposals, and submit it for the 2021 NFPA Conference & Expo. The call for proposals will open in June of 2020. Please submit your questions to tweisel@nfpa.org.

NFPA Technical Meeting/Technical Session Questions

Although C&E is being cancelled, the Annual Technical Meeting (Tech Session) will be held electronically. NFPA will be using alternative procedures so that those documents with Certified Amending Motions (CAM) for both Fall 2019 and Annual 2020 revision cycles can be processed by the NFPA Standards Council with input from the public and eligible voting NFPA members. While it is unfortunate that the current conditions created by the coronavirus have made this alternative action necessary, NFPA is working on a virtual solution for the 2020 Tech Session that preserves the essential elements core to the NFPA Standards Development process. Please also visit our website for additional information and updates.

For any questions regarding the Tech Session please email techsession@nfpa.org
