The Fire Protection Research Foundation presents William M Carey Award

February , 2006 – The Fire Protection Research Foundation, an affiliate of theNational Fire Protection Association (NFPA), presented the William M. Carey Award to the authors of a paper titled “Results of a Clinical Study of the Waking Effectiveness of Fire Signaling Devices.” The Award was presented at the Foundation’s tenth annual Fire Suppression and Detection Research Application Symposium held in Orlando, Fla. earlier this month.

The authors are Erin Ashley and Jacqueline DuBois from Combustion Science and Engineering in Columbia, Maryland. The Award recognizes the symposium’s best paper from last year, voted by attendees. About 25 papers were presented at that conference.

The Award honors the late William Carey, P.E., senior staff engineer at Underwriters Laboratories Inc. Carey made many major contributions to new fire suppression technologies and served on various technical advisory committees of the Foundation.

The conference provides an opportunity for fire detection and suppression professionals to share new information, innovations, and plans regarding upcoming research. The emphasis is on real-world application of new documentation in designs, approvals, and codes.

The Fire Protection Research Foundation convenes international research councils to help define fire problems in need of research, conducts research application symposia on a broad range of fire safety issues, and manages broad-based consortium-funded research in collaboration with scientists and laboratories around the world.

NFPA has been a worldwide leader in providing fire, electrical, building, and life safety to the public since 1896. The mission of the international nonprofit organization is to reduce the worldwide burden of fire and other hazards on the quality of life by providing and advocating consensus codes and standards, research, training and education.
