Keeping Your Community Safe with Home Fire Escape Planning

home fire escape drills

NFPA’s tool kit on home fire escape planning includes everything you’ll need to help residents in your community make and practice a home fire escape plan. Fire can spread quickly throughout a home, leaving as little as two minutes to escape safely once the smoke alarm sounds. Making a home fire escape plan and practicing a home fire escape drill are important elements of home fire safety.

For families

To begin developing a home fire escape plan with all members of your family, draw a map of your home. You can refer to NFPA's How to Make a Fire Escape Plan (PDF) to get started, or simply make a map on a piece of paper. Then, use this checklist to make sure your escape plan includes all the elements needed to ensure your household’s safety from fire.
