Tentative Interim Amendments, Errata, and Formal Interpretations

Tentative Interim Amendments

Tentative Interim Amendments (TIAs) are amendments to an NFPA standard processed in accordance with Section 5 of the Regulations Governing the Development of NFPA Standards. TIAs have not been published in a First Draft Report and Second Draft Report for review and comment.  An issued TIA automatically becomes a Public Input for the next edition of the standard, and is then subject to all of the procedures of the standards development process. TIAs are published in NFPA News, NFPA LiNK®, the National Fire Code Subscription Service (NFCSS), and any further distribution of the standard after being issued by the Standards Council.

Requesting a TIA
To request a TIA, download and complete a Tentative Interim Amendment request form. Include a statement of the problem and a reason for the emergency nature requiring prompt action. Also, provide written agreement to the processing of the submitted TIA of two members of the applicable Technical Committee or Correlating Committee. Completed forms can be forwarded to the Secretary, Standards Council

Proposed TIAs
Proposed TIAs are published for public review and comment, and are forwarded to the responsible Technical Committee and Correlating Committee for processing. The Technical Committee considers comments received before final action is taken on the proposed TIA. The Standards Council then reviews the Technical Committee's ballot results, public comments, and any other information that has been submitted.  Anyone may submit a comment on a proposed TIA. To submit a comment, please identify the TIA number, state whether you support or oppose the TIA along with your comment, and forward to the Secretary, Standards Council by the closing date listed below.

Errata

An Errata is a correction issued to an NFPA Standard, published in NFPA News, NFPA LiNK®, the National Fire Codes Subscription Service (NFCSS), and included in any further distribution of the Standard.

Formal Interpretations

Formal Interpretations (FIs) are for the purpose of providing formal, balloted responses of the intent of specific provision(s) of an NFPA standard.  In the most basic terms:  a formal interpretation provides response to a single question, in a form to be answered with either “yes” or “no” and requires balloting of the technical committee responsible for that particular standard.  Should the technical committee ballot not yield an answer supported by ¾  majority vote for either “yes” or “no”, no formal interpretation results.  Where no formal interpretation results, the issue is put before the committee at its next meeting for resolution.  Where a formal interpretation results (with a "yes" or "no" answer), the formal interpretation is issued and becomes effective 20 days after final ballot results and is also considered in the next revision cycle to clarify the text interpreted.  After issuance of the next edition of the NFPA Standard, the issued formal interpretation shall be retired.  See Section 6 of the Regulations Governing the Development of NFPA Standards.
